I wonder how many of you have thought about what happens if we vote for a union. I see a lot of talk about how wages will jump up to $30 an hour – do you really believe this will happen? Ask yourself, how long have the phone and power companies had unions – 30 to 40+ years? Do you think that because we vote for a union that Burkley will pay us $30 an hour? Has anyone sat and negotiated a contract before? Do you really think that they will give us more money without us giving something up in return? Will it be giving up vacation time? Pension plan? Will we have to pay more for our health care? Let’s get the facts and stop listening to the jive from the union who promises everything to everyone. I for one am tired of all the infighting that is going on around me. People aren’t treating each other the same depending on where you stand on this issue. I know we have problems – every company union or non-union has problems. Do you think if we go union that our problems will magically go away? Who’s kidding who? I’ve worked here 7 years worked hard and done well. Look around – it’s a good company with good benefits. I just signed up for the career path and look forward to bumping my wage again in a year. What other company can give you that? Let’s get back to work and cut the belly aching.

I have heard many people talk about [ THE UNION ] .

my understanding of what a union is , is very simple .

A union is a group of people working together to improve there employment .

If i am right that means that the union is us , the union is we .

That means that the strenght of a union depends on its members willingness to take action .

If we do nothing , nothing will change .

Serious Question;

Will I have to join the Union if it is voted in?

Will I have to Pay Dues?

If I refuse to do either what will happen?

Do I have to have payroll deduction?

I bet no one from the union will answer you on here. I am beginning to wonder if they even check the website.

If they do, they'll just tell you to "go to a meeting, oh and bring some friends."

What does the press care? The public will appluade TW for trying to keep costs down. Not many pro-union hacks out there in the real world. The consumer knows how much unions cost them, and most have no sympathy for Union organizing efforts.

Hardball? Were you born this morning? TW has the ball, the field, makes the rulesn and owns the team, it is their ballgame. Hardball!

A+ to the comment above me.

And as you may have noticed, someone asked a serious question about a week ago, and no union rep has bothered to log in.

Seems alot like the current problem some have with TWC management.

Questions asked...No answers.

Why can't I post a comment? I tried and there is a problem. I wanted to ask Brent why he is throwing his supervisor under the bus? he has one of the bes supervisor I have ever had. i don't have him anymore and I miss him. Are you trying to get him fired Brewnt? I saw when tou came out of the office. he wasn't carrying any of your shit, it looked like he was helping you along so you wouldn't infect anyone. You are two faced and people need to know that. Your supervisor bends over backwards for you nd you do this to him, shame on you!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think people already know all about Brent. He will be looking for a new job soon, because all of his coworkers will avoid him like the plague, and treating him like shit

I've put in my time and taken my lumps. I also know what MY responsibilities are. I knew when I took this job that it was not a 9-5 job. If I want to make sure I get out on time every day I would be a CSR or dispatcher. Every job has its good and bad points. That is called work. A lot of job satisfaction depends on what you put into it. I like the fact that I don't have a boss I see every day. I like that I get the freedoms I have, working outside. I don't like the workload being as bad as it is lately, but that is the type of work we do. I don't think that I am going to vote yes for a union, but from reading this site, apparently that makes me a jerk. There are a growing number of us who do not discuss union at all anymore because every time we state our opnion the pro-union techs jump all over us. I understand that they are trying to share their opinion, but just because I don't agree with yours does not make me an @$$hole. There was a post recently that stated the union has only helped stir up animosity and break us apart. I completely agree and it is too bad. This whole situation could have been handled a lot better and there probably would have been more yes votes, possibly even mine. There are too many "hot heads" that just cause animosity and discontent to make a real stab at this. For those of you who still support the union, that is your right and I understand why, but take a little time and try to understand that there are different opinions out there and we aren't all "stupid" or "morons". We just stop talking about it so we don't have to deal with the repercussions of disagreeing with you.

Many of us like the work we do . cable tv,internet and phone is a very interesting job . but the pay and work load is out of line with the very high profits that this company is making .

Most of us feel like we are being taken advantage of when we are told we have to work over time like it or not . heavy work load like it or not . low pay like it or not .

We are contantly told that we are doing a great job and that the division is doing very well . if that is true we should see that in our pay checks and our work loads and the way we are treated .

Many of us have made attempts at talking to local management about these workplace problems only to find that they have no control over wages and work load .

we have a choice we can join together and form a union and work together to solve these problems . or we can do nothing and nothing will change .

This is a great site. the union put this here for their gain and in return this site has proven to hurt them as all of the pro guys look like idiots and this has actully turned people off. Say no to the union we get treated good and just got a raise and my career path-when i am eligible again will get me where i need to be. where else can you go and get a 3 to 5 % raise each year and possibly an extra 1.60 increase by passing some tests? most of you pro guys probably are afraid of tests... all you pro union guys want something for nothing. quit whining and cowboy up bitches cause we know who you are and i will be laughing at you when i am making 10 dollars more per hour than you when i succed with career path and you are still singing the same song and dance about a union to get you more money. this is the best company to work for, benefits like no other, a vehicle to take home, good pay and a great sup that treats me well and shoots it straight. Us guys in rockland are sick of hearing about your union so go away- better yet get to work and take some pride in your work. think about all of the stuff the company does for you instead of wht it does not. my sup takes us out to lunch as a team with the best numbers each month, they buy us donuts every week, give us a turkey every year and flexible when we have personal things we need to get done. let me think of all the shit holes i worked at where i never got a thank you at christmas time, where i had to pay for my own boots, clothing and gas and there was no flexibility. you pro guys are complete idiots and we should have a blanket party on you guys and if this thing passes some of you are going to get your asses kicked because a lot of us are going to be pissed off. watch your back and dont talk that union smack over here.

Dearest Brent,

While we all enjoy our free cable, I kindly ask that you view the entire spectrum of viewing possibilities. X-Files was a great show, and I personally thought Schully was a looker and a half, but the conspiracy theories were just a plot in an overly dramatic series. Everybody is not out to get us man. Why don't you just relax, sit back, and realize that we are treated quite well.

If its that obvious how awful the conspirators in the Ivory Tower really are, and they exposed themselves for the villainous liars you portray them as ... why are you still here? I'd imagine its because you do take pride in your work, you enjoy the company of those you work with, and you really do care about all of us on some level.

What I'd like you to realize is that many changes have come since 2001, its a different company. And that's not just figuritive either, it really has become a new company. I have a career path, I have a raise. I am making money that is proportionate to the work that I do.

I have a feeling a reason many of the long time employees push for a Union so earnestly is because of the way your job is secured. They have been here a long time and make a wage that's disproportionate to the work that they do. The values do not add up from a bean counting standpoint. If the economy continues this faceplant, which it will, then they will be the most probable candidates for a lay off. In a Union it is based entirely on seniority.

I understand its a hard place to be Brent, and I truly do feel for you. But in the end, a Union will not help the majority of our co-workers. I do thank you for your spirit and pride, but in the end it just wasn't meant to be.

Thanks,
The Management.

Serious Answer to a Serious Question;

Will I have to join the Union if it is voted in? No

Will I have to Pay Dues? You will have to pay dues if you become a member or an equivalent fee if you choose not to join because either way the union represents you.

If I refuse to do either what will happen? Depends on the outcome of contract negotiations but most Collective Bargaining Agreements require the Company to terminate an employee who refuses to pay dues or an equivalant fee for the everyday costs of representation.

Do I have to have payroll deduction? Unknown; also part of negotiations but it is much easier for employees to pay dues through payroll deduction than to have to send a check.

Also,

-dues for the IBEW are (depending on what local) between 1% and 1.5% of your base 40 hour salary (overtime is not included).

-dues are tax deductible.

I tell you what... If the union comes, will it be willing to let me stay out of it, and continue with my own path, which i believe is best for me. Or will they force me to join them, and pay them money to lead me down a patch I dont feel is best for me?

Once a majority of techs sign authorization cards, the union will petition for an election. The election is conducted by an agent for the National Labor Relations Board usually about 45 days after the petition is filed. After a majority (50% + 1) of techs vote yes for IBEW representation, the process will begin for negotiations for a first contract. All wages and benefits freeze; the company cannot take anything away from you. Techs will elect representatives from all the locations involved who will sit at the bargaining table with experienced negotiators from the IBEW across from management. All techs will decide beforehand (and throughout the process) what is important for them in a first contract. When the negotiations are completed, there will be a vote on whether or not to accept the final package.

So I don't have to join? But I have to pay. That sounds great and makes no sense. Technically I won't be a member, but I WILL be represented. So what you are saying is that I DO HAVE TO BE REPRESENTED BY A UNION and contribute the same about of money as someone who "joins" and if I refuse to contribute then I will be fired.

Sure sounds like I'm forced to join then. Thanks for the clarification two weeks later.

UNION NO.

And to clarify this point you made as well. Once a majority of techs sign cards...(the card is essentially a vote so in many instances the union will actually push right past the "vote" because the cards are a "vote".

And if the "final package" is rejected because it sucks, it then goes back to "negotiation?" Will our benefits still freeze? If this "final package process takes a year" and the members of the union still don't like what is being offered, can we vote the union out and get back to business?

Thanks.

Anonymous said...

"And to clarify this point you made as well. Once a majority of techs sign cards...(the card is essentially a vote so in many instances the union will actually push right past the "vote" because the cards are a "vote"."

Actually the convoluted process set up by the NLRB requires 2 votes. First the cards and then the actual vote. It would make things a lot easier for the workers if the law called for one vote and not 2. The company has the right to voluntarily recognize after a majority signs cards but TWC will not do that.

If for some reason you want to vote the union out, the same process as getting one in applies.

UNION YES YES YES!!!!

No need to be a smart-ass, union no. If you really wanted a quick reply to your question you could have called one of the reps. ……… Curious, after earlier reading two blog postings that had been posted on September 30 (that were not pro union) both asking some questions and seemed to make some good points…. Well, now they’re gone – Who posted those two should re-post!
As far as some of the points and questions… Is Fairpoint entirely union? NO… if the union is such a great deal why were there telephone workers even pre-Fairpoint that were NOT union, hmmmmmmmm. Has anybody asked our would be “brothers” at Fairpoint if they would strike with us if the need arose… They will tell you, NO! And the union will state that strikes are the last alternative, probably never happen (just like Verizon)– know why? Because they would not be able to convince our “brothers” to do so AND with less than 4% of TWC being unionized there is NO strength for bargaining! I see the union being desperate to get members after losing so many when Fairpoint came in and so many former members accepted early out and relocation options from Verizon. Oh yeah, don’t forget, during any and all bargaining all benefits and perks would be frozen, we all agree with this right? Why does anybody believe that TWC would give any raises, even small ones, during this period… I know that the union is on record for saying that we would still receive these raises – Riiiiiggghht, so if you were TWC you would right? Wrong, does not happen! Okay, once a contract would be settled we MIGHT get retroactive pay… Again, not always, and certainly not obligated! And what if the negotiations take 1, or 2, or as in some previous cases possibly 5 YEARS (YES, read the contracts, look at the dates and MAKE CONTACT with other TWC employees that are current or past union members!‼). Willing to bet that the union was able to dine out with their wives, make their car payments and go on vacations, while not so much for those employees. I do not think that the union has at all been on the level, all it took was one meeting. Even the cards are in question… “Google” brings up even more questions on those… Are the cards a vote and can they be turned in to the ‘second’ vote? Some say yes, and while some say no, they will also have to add ‘for now’ as there is pending legislation that could make it YES all of the time! Why, if there is sooooo much support and soooo many cards being signed we don’t know about a vote date yet? Waiting for the legislation to pass? How about ‘put up or shut up,’ show your numbers declare it done (pass or fail) and let the rest of us go back to working in peace! If you’re not happy with the raise you received, work harder. If you’re not passing your QC’s, work more carefully. If you need help in a day to make sure that you can properly do the job, ask for it! If you think that too many QC’s are bad, you’re not very good at math and how percentages work in your favor. If you believe that you are not able to move ahead because a supervisor, or that somebody unknown is intentionally targeting you talk to a manger, no results go to personnel. – Don’t forget to hold on to any possible conspiracy theory along the way! But, if you can’t do the job based in the percentage of averages compared to all of our co-workers, step aside. I for one enjoy being able to move ahead in the career path of IR and not having to worry about carrying those that don’t feel they need to work for it… those that expect handouts, because of their seniority, couldn’t that be considered as ‘unionized welfare!’
C’mon, quit the false sale. Anybody who doubts this post should read the contacts and use “Google” to do some research, and the internet to reach out to other employees in other divisions. Union will not change anything that is being complained about… proof is in their own words. Work is work, if your body aches go to bed earlier, take some aspirin for the hang over, and go to work inside.

If that were the case, TW Maine would already be union. Yes, signing a card is a yes vote for the union. However, under current law, the union cannot force TW to recognize. The company has the option of recognizing or going to a second vote. They will undoubtedly seek a second chance to intimidate people into changing their vote. Card check is not the "convenient path for the uinion" as you say. It makes it easier for the employees who are trying to organize themselves into a union because it cuts out the employer intimidation.

Anonymous said...

the only intimidation i have seen is from time warner. the union people i have dealt with and heard about have been very polite and helpfull.

as far as unions in the work place being bad i dont belive that at all. every union worker i have talked to has only good things to say about there union.

i belive that time warner is scared to death that we will find out how good unions are ,and they will have to treat us the way they should have all along.

Good day, sun shines!
There have were times of troubles when I didn't know about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright stupid person.
I have never thought that there weren't any need in large starting capital.
Nowadays, I'm happy and lucky , I begin to get real money.
It gets down to select a proper companion who utilizes your money in a right way - that is incorporate it in real business, and shares the profit with me.

You can ask, if there are such firms? I'm obliged to tell the truth, YES, there are. Please get to know about one of them:
